Riaz promises to reveal names of NRO beneficiaries
Staff Report
LAHORE: Assuring the legislative assembly that they would provide the House the names of all the politicians who had benefited through the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Senior Minister Raja Riaz said that the Pakistan People’s PartY (PPP) was not interested in the NRO.
He clarified the party’s position on a question regarding the NRO during question time at the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday. He said that although the PPP was not interested in bringing the NRO to the parliament, it was willing to put up the matter because of the concerns of its coalition partners.
Riaz said that since allied parties had raised objections on the issue, the PPP had decided not to table the NRO in the parliament. He added that it was unlikely that President Asif Ali Zardari would be affected in any regard. Talking to reporters outside the assembly, he said that there were no issues between PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) after the statement of the spokesman of President Zardari and the issue of NRO had now been dumped. To another query, Riaz said that the president was not ‘upset’ with the decision on the NRO. To a question on the future of the PPP and the PML-N alliance in Punjab he said their coalition was not in trouble and that both parties would remain to strengthen the process of democracy in the country.
